Incarcerated individuals in African prisons live in harsh conditions. Overcrowding and unhygienic conditions, lack of medical care and food can all lead to illness and death.
The Ubumi Prisons Initiative works for the rights of all inmates in Zambia’s prisons, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable; children and youth, pregnant women, the seriously ill, the mentally ill and the mentally vulnerable.
Ubumi works to limit and mitigate the psychological, physical, social and health consequences of imprisonment.
We focus in particular on the most vulnerable – very young children, young people and the seriously ill – but also on education and reintegration. There are many options for support. We save lives!
